Closing in on a Return to Florida

With our last blog we mentioned waiting for Henri and visiting Farmers Markets in Unadilla, NY at a KOA.  We usually don't stop in  KOA parks due to the cost, but our first choice wasn't available due to lots of rain. It was an OK KOA, not worth the extra dollars, but the extra rain gave us a good break, too. As it turned out it was a good break for us because we ended up in Wolcott, NY which is NW of Syracuse at a very nice park called Cherry Grove.  This very quiet, clean, and family run park offered amenities we usually see only in larger resorts: interesting miniature golf, jumping pillow for the kids, soft-serve and hand-packed ice-cream.  If we ever get back to this area, we will not hesitate to come back to Cherry Grove.

Exploring Lake Ontario Area

While in Wolcott we met with Ann and Dave Hancock, friends from Trace who moved to Florida before we did. They come from New York and spend some months there in a fifth-wheel. Ray and Ann coordinated our meeting in Sackets Harbor, about half-way between their campground and ours. We enjoyed a lunch at Sackets Harbor Brewing Company with a great view of the Harbor. We also learned that from our location in this picture, Dave can see land across the bay where his fourth great grandfather farmed, land that was in the family for generations.

Augustus Sacket founded Sackets Harbor in the early 1800s. Its natural harbor was the important factor in its development and continuing success. In the War of 1812, Sackets Harbor was a key outpost that helped defeat the British! It became a place where New Yorkers summered along Lake Ontario, but the depression saw the town steadily decline. And the decline almost destroyed the area until a few enterprising residents decided to fix up a bank building. Amazing things happened, one building after another was purchased and rehabbed and now it is a summer destination. Madison Barracks was a military post until 1946, now it's a tony, upscale place to spend a summer.

The next day we headed west along Lake Ontario toward Rochester where we attempted to visit with an old friend from Florida, Billy Munro, however he was not home when we stopped by his house OR-

He didn't hear the doorbell. We left a note and Billy called us later that day. He has a phone that types as we speak. If you call speak very slowly. We had lost touch with him and were glad to learn he was doing well. After stopping at Billy’s, we went to Wegman’s which is one of, if not the best, grocery stores we’ve ever been to.  We bought some local tomatoes, Italian bread, Italian cold cuts, Marcona Almonds, and cheese then headed back to our RV to enjoy a nice glass of wine with our snack.

We had beautiful weather while in Wolcott and spent another day riding along the coast of Lake Ontario through Sodus Point and Williamson. We also managed to find a nice small farmer’s market in Sodus Point and were able to restock some of our veggies.  We’ve been really lucky finding nice farmer’s markets on this trip and Sodus Point was no different.  

Our final day in Wolcott was spent touring Wolcott and a couple of small towns around Wolcott.  We also got to stop at a couple of local farm stands and a winery where we enjoyed the white wine and so much we bought some to share with Florida friends.

On to Ohio

Our next stop was in Geneva on the Lake Ohio (GOTL) where we spent two weeks so we didn’t have to travel over Labor Day. Indian Creek is a very nice RV park within walking distance of Lake Erie and not far from Cleveland and Canton.

Halls of Fame

One of our first trips from GOTL was to the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.  We’ve been looking forward to visiting this hall of fame and were not disappointed.  There is so much to see and do we were there over 3 ½ hours.  The NFL does a great job explaining the history of NFL and has many displays of games and players of the past.  Wonderful place to visit.

Two days later, we drove to Cleveland and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I think Lalia was looking forward to visiting here more than I was, but it also was a great place to visit.  They do a great job of explaining the history of Rock and Roll going all the way back to the 40’s.  It was interesting how rock and roll, country, and the blues were mixed together in the early years, explained in a great display about all the years from the 40’s to recent years.

You could try recording your own music in one studio with musicians who would play for you to sing. Two drum rooms allowed you to try and play along with some famous groups, and playing instruments, guitars and keyboards around the area called The Garage Band.

One of the most amazing things was seeing some of the actual outfits some of the entertainer wore.  So much color and glitter and how skinny most of these people were/are. Some of these outfits didn’t look like you could fit a small child in them! Even though one floor of this hall of fame was closed for renovations it took us almost 4 hours to see all the displays.

Other days in Geneva on the Lake were spent walking along the lake, visiting some wineries, and farm stands, and generally relaxing.

Needed Repairs

We did make some small repairs to the RV including getting our windshield day/night screen to work again.  Somehow the programming got messed up and it stopped working, however, after we figured out the wiring for this shade was installed backwards we were able to make the repairs ourselves.  From this park we’ll head to Galena, Ohio, north of Columbus, for our next blog update.
